METHODOLOGY
TARGET POPULATION
The target population for the CSJP III is those persons living in 50 vulnerable and volatile
communities across eight parishes. At-risk youth are of particular focus in the many
programmes offered by the CSJP. Young people targeted for this study ranged in age
from 13 to 29 years for two reasons:
• 90.0 per cent of the victims of crime and 90.0
per cent of the perpetrators are young people, mainly Beyond age 29, young
males, under 30 years old. people, especially

• The PMI advised that based on their experience, young men, are very
they did not target youth beyond 29 years of age, hard, if not impossible,
although they were open to anyone who approached to reach in terms of
the organisation. The reason for this age limit is that changing violent crim-
beyond this age it is difficult, if not impossible, to change inal behaviour
violent criminal behaviour in young people, especially - PMI
young men. Greater emphasis was therefore placed
on engaging males since they were the main perpetrators of violence. However, the role
and the experience of females were by no means underestimated, as the numbers below
indicate.
QUALITATIVE METHODS
The nature of the material required by this study, namely insights into the pro-violent norms
that are well entrenched in the socio-cultural landscape of the communities and are part
of the socialization of youth in volatile communities, necessitates the use of qualitative
methods. Investigating and bringing into the conversation these often unspoken
assumptions, part of a world-view that is part of normal life, or talking about issues that
may be recognized but are highly sensitive, cannot be approached using quantitative
methods.
