Social norms tell a lot about an individual as well as a community and their propensity for
different types of violent behaviour. As the norms are internalised, and even when they
differ between, and even within, communities, the tendency is to conform. By violating
norms, the individual, family or community may experience feelings of guilt or shame, and
can face scorn, scandal, social disapproval, banishment or punishment.
