ANNEX 2

                   GUIDELINES FOR GUIDANCE COUNSELLORS IN

CHOOSING STUDENTS FOR THE CSJP SOCIAL

                                    NORMS RESEARCH PROJECT

                1. The focus group should comprise eight (8) male or female students depending on
                       the school

                       Kingston High and Central High – Males;

Jonathan Grant High and Anchovy High – Females
                                             54

                2. Students should be drawn from across all the Grade 7 classes.

                3. Very shy students should not be chosen. They do not have to be very talkative –
and certainly not a student who is very dominant.

                4. We want four (4) boys or girls (depending on the specific gender of the group
for the school) who have problems – behavioural problems, poverty problems,
poor at tendance problems etc. We have skilled facilitators who can ‘reach’ and
                       therefore
control a student with behavioural problems as long as it is not severe
                       Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

                5. We want a mixture among the other four, average to high performing
students, but not anyone who is boastful nature about her/his achievements
and who is known to be resented for this by other students. This will destroy the
                       focus group dynamic.

                6. All the students’ parents must have filled out the parent permission letter
before the focus group discussion. Otherwise the students are not eligible.

                7. Our minimum number is six students so that if one or two are absent on the day
this will not affect the group discussion.

54 For logistical reasons, this school was later replaced by Spanish Town High.
