The value of case management to the client
Case management, as DJ described it, made a significant difference in his life and
perhaps in the life of the other beneficiaries. He believed that the consistent efforts by the
CSJP staff in addressing the needs of the beneficiaries were very crucial, as many needed
the continued guidance. He indicated that the interest shown in his progress was very
motivating for him, as he knew he had to follow through on his commitment to complete
the programme.
THE CASE MANAGER’S PERSPECTIVE
The discussions that were held with the case manager about DJ’s progress through the
case management process were very profound. It was clear that only direct involvement
with the clients could provide case managers in the CSJP III with a clear understanding of
the unique realities of the at-risk youth population.
From the case manager’s perspective, case management was deemed to be a structured
process to manage the CSJP III clients and to ensure that treatment plans were being
executed in a consistent manner. It was also posited that this approach made it easier
to track the CSJP III participants’ progress, and to adjust their treatment plans as needed.
The case manager believed that the training and development programmes in which
that group participated had, to an extent, prepared them to effectively interact with
