Document search: Desk reviews are critical to the evaluation in the preliminary phase,
and throughout the study as a form of methodological triangulation. The core documents
include major crime statistics, crime maps generated by Mona GeoInformatics Institute,
and a large quantity of material from CSJP and PMI related to the operation of the VIP.
Structured observation: The core purpose of the structured observation was to triangulate
data collected from the integrated survey and interviews. Structured observation matrices
were employed. For instance we wanted to tick the number of times people greeted the
VIs and check the degree of pleasantries. We also needed to check the age of the persons
who greeted them as we walked together in the communities and to see if the target
population (youth) considered them important. We also used structured observation to
check the relationship between VIs to assess team composition. Team members’ body
angles and distances when in the company of others were all noted. We also calculated
who speaks most often. Finally, the tool was most critical to determine the personalities of
the VIs and to register their fears and weaknesses as they spoke. This means that the VI
interviews were done in pairs – an interviewer and a silent expert observer.
