The government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening national security and supporting the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) with the handover of one hundred and forty-three (143) brand-new vehicles.
Added to the fleet are seventy-one (71) pickups, two trucks and seventy (70) motorcycles, which Minister of National Security and Peace, the Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, said will significantly aid the police in maintaining public order.
“How we use them will determine the extent to which we succeed in delivering the peace dividend to our communities. Let us maximise their use,” the security minister said at the handover ceremony held at the Office of the Police Commissioner in Kingston yesterday (Thursday, April 9).
The vehicles, valued at nearly J$570 million, represents critical tools of public safety, Minister Chang noted.
He pointed out that Jamaica’s economic development is closely tied to public order and safety, and that the addition of these purposed-built police vehicles signals the government’s continued investment in the national security architecture.
At the same time, Minister Chang noted that internal investors have expressed confidence in Jamaica’s improved security infrastructure, citing billions invested in policing, technology and training as reasons for expanding projects locally.
He added that over six thousand new officers have been recruited and trained, and that these additions to the Force indicate the government’s seriousness about maintaining the strength of the JCF.
“The government is emphasising that peace and good public order are essential foundations for economic growth and investment,” Minister Chang stated.
He further noted that Jamaica is demonstrating its ability to achieve significant crime reduction “in an open and democratic society” and to move away from violence as a response to many of the country’s challenges.
“These efforts”, Minister Chang said, “combined with improved communication systems and modern equipment, are intended to ensure that officers have the tools they need to protect communities and maintain public order.”
