Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, the Hon. Dr. Horace Chang says the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is making remarkable progress necessary for sustainable crime reduction.
“We are already seeing tangible results, including a significant reduction in homicide, an unfortunate, yet primary benchmark for police performance in Jamaica,” he stated.
He shared this while delivering the keynote address at the Passing Out Parade and Award Ceremony for Batches 157 and 158 at the National Police College of Jamaica in St. Catherine on Friday (March 21).
Minister Chang encouraged the 335 new constables to use their roles as police officers to advance the cause of nation building and law enforcement.
He added that: “The Jamaica Constabulary Force has reached a pivotal stage. We have laid a strong foundation for cultural identity of the Force, achieved our establishment level, and made significant investments in building a modern and effective policing ecosystem.”
The Security Minister noted that improved intelligence gathering, enhanced equipment and an increase in the officer corps has helped to combat challenges faced in law enforcement notwithstanding the growing demands and responsibilities of policing.
He gave a comprehensive overview of the ongoing investments in infrastructure, training, as well as technological upgrades, which will ensure that the JCF remains capable of addressing modern challenges.
“... The Force must possess the operational capabilities to deal with threats. Similarly, with the rise of cybercrime, the police must adapt by developing specialised units to combat digital and cyber threats,” he added.
He explained the importance of the unwavering commitment required to save lives, protect communities and enforce the laws of Jamaica.
The Ministry of National Security remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening the Jamaica Constabulary Force through strategic investments in infrastructure, training and technology. As the Force continues to evolve to meet emerging security challenges, the Ministry will ensure the necessary resources and investments are provided.
