Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, the Hon. Dr Horace Chang, has reaffirmed that the government's investments in technology and police infrastructure are proving successful.
“Improved police mobility and a fresh approach to investigations are yielding positive results, demonstrating the effectiveness of these initiatives,” Minister Chang stated.
Delivering the main address at the handing over ceremony of a new fleet of vehicles to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) on Wednesday, February 19, Minister Chang highlighted the enhanced capabilities of the police in identifying and apprehending criminal actors.
“We will find the criminals and bring them in one way or the other. Whether we bring them in the pickup or if they want to come on a stretcher, that is their business,” the Minister declared, emphasizing the JCF's no-nonsense approach to combating organized crime.
The strategic procurement of 274 motor vehicles, including 90 motorcycles along with essential components such as lightbars, siren systems and SmartCheck devices at a cost of approximately J$1.7 billion, is a critical requirement to effectively uphold national security interests and support restructured operational activities.
Minister Chang explained that these vehicles are crucial tools that will enable the police to establish law and public order across the society.
“These vehicles are partly police tools, in that over time, they have helped to transform the police force by providing the ecosystem needed to effectively enforce the law,” he said.
The security minister noted that the handing over of vehicles represents a significant investment and is a testament to the government's commitment to strengthening the national security apparatus. “I am expressing publicly my confidence in the police force, led by Dr Kevin Blake, Commissioner of Police, who I am sure, will get the job done and find those miscreants who try to disrupt society,” Minister Chang stated.
Minister Chang also emphasized the importance of law and order, public safety and security as pillars for building a strong economy and improving the quality of life, stating, “We have provided the police with the tools to make this a reality”.
He reassured the public that the police force's enhanced capacity would ensure criminals are brought to justice and held accountable for their actions.
