Prevalent depressive symptoms in the sample
A frequency analysis was done on all the variables in the BDI assessment. The sum of
respondents who chose options from 1 to 3 was computed to identify the most prevalent
depressive symptom (table 6). Symptoms that were most prevalent in this sample included
changes in sleep pattern (77.3 per cent); sadness (73.9 per cent); punishment feelings
(70.7 per cent); guilty feelings (67.5 per cent); and self-dislike (67.5 per cent).
