A CSJP III CASE STUDY
“My goal as a child was to stay alive” – DJ, CSJP III Client
INTRODUCTION
The case management approach, as described in the previous chapters, includes a
series of interventions offered to at-risk clients in volatile communities served by the Citizen
Security and Justice Programme. The approach includes clients being screened, risk
assessed, participating in life skills training and psychological services, drug counselling
and vocational training. These interventions were intended to help reduce the risk levels
of clients who are considered to be violence producers. The ensuing case study is an
account of a beneficiary’s experience as he transitioned through different interventions
in the programme and his movement from an initial high-risk assessment to a low-risk
assessment at the end of the case management interventions. It is not always the case,
however, that a beneficiary will attain a low-risk assessment at the end of the interventions.
The case study was conducted to identify the meaningful characteristics of the case
management approach involved in the delivery of services to high-risk clients who were
beneficiaries of the programmes in CSJP III. The study also explored the dynamics of
the case management approach from the perspective of key stakeholders. Essentially,
the case study examined the journey of a beneficiary through the CSJP III and how the
case management approach enhanced the social intervention programme. Results of
this case are expected to provide insights that may be instructive for research into social
intervention or other violence prevention programmes that seek to engage high-risk youth
who are perpetrators of violence.
STUDY QUESTIONS
The overall study question is as follows:
